Cargo – Street Use https://kk.org/streetuse This site features the ways in which people modify and re-create technology. Herein a collection of personal modifications, folk innovations, street customization, ad hoc alterations, wear-patterns, home-made versions and indigenous ingenuity. In short -- stuff as it is actually used, and not how its creators planned on it being used. As William Gibson said, "The street finds its own uses for things." I welcome suggestions of links, and contributions from others to include in this compendium. -- KK Mon, 09 Oct 2006 13:53:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.9.12 Farmer-Built Submarine https://kk.org/streetuse/farmerbuilt-submarine/ https://kk.org/streetuse/farmerbuilt-submarine/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2006 14:43:47 +0000 Continue reading ]]> The original source is in Chinese, so I don’t know too much about this homebuilt submarine, other than it was built by a Chinese farmer. On inspection, I doubt it will even submerge; it is probably simply a boat with submarine decoration. I hope I am wrong.

Yet, I know every kid with one of these boy-built toys would trade it in a second for a mass-produced plastic truck. This example comes from the Solomon Islands. I found the picture on the UNICEF Childrenssite.

Toy trucks are popular. These you push with a stick to make them go over rough roads. Being a truck driver is what a lot of kids would like to grow up to do. Note the cool cargo.
